The Summer Hikaru Died

Title: The Summer Hikaru Died/Japanese: 光が死んだ夏, Hepburn: Hikaru ga Shinda Natsu

Creator(s): Mokumokuren

Find It: in stores, online, (yarghh hoist the flag, matey)

Rating: 4/5 shrines

Additional Comments: Do I even need to talk about this one? I haven't watched the anime yet, but I'm excited. I REALLY WANT ACTIONS FIGURES OF HIKARU AND YOSHIKI!!! Anyways, art is gorgeous, paneling and lettering is so creative, so freaky and gay. BUT! I do actually have a critique. Maybe it will get sorted out by the end, but as of issue five, the actually lore of the manga is....confusing. And kinda seems thrown together...Maybe something was lost in translation, or the creator was just making it up as they go along, idk. But otherwise, banger manga. I'll show my favorite panels below (spoilers duh)

Dreadful Night

Title: Dreadful Night

Creator(s): Moan

Find It: Lezhin (cough cough argh me matey would you like to sail the seven seas?)

Rating: 3/5 video games

Additional Comments: Part of my rating may be because I had reaaaally low expectations for this lol. Like I have been reading some yaoi SLOP recently and this surpassed my expectations. Compelling plot, pretty good smut, MC isn't a total wet towel. I was genuinely on the edge of my seat HOOKED with this one. I am eagerly awaiting season 3 because I NEED TO KNOW WHAT HAPPENS NEXT!!!! Art-wise, it's alright. I'm not holding too much against the creator bc they seem to be in a time crunch like many serialized comic creators. Several props and backgrounds are just blatant, unedited 3D models, proportions are off sometimes, all of the character design seems to go to the main character. So is it a modern classic? No. But it's pretty engaging and has some good twists.

Like others of this ilk, there are many dubious-consent moments (by which I mean non-consent moments if this was the real world). I'm not really a fan of this common addition to gay comics. Am I shaming? No, but I think that when done poorly it's a cover-up for bad romance writing (or wanting to get to the sex as soon as possible). In Dreadful Night, I will give it a crumb of praise for giving the main character agency (mostly). Not to spoil anything, but the MC usually chooses to engage in sexy times with the love interest for one reason or another. When the love interest goes too far, the main character punishes him. Is any of this good? NO! IT'S STILL AN ABUSIVE RELATIONSHIP! But this is also a horror BL webcomic. I won't go into the intricacies of fantasy and kink, but I think it's safe to say the rules of this creative, fictional work are different than real life. Also they're literally stuck in a slasher video game.

I digress. Pretty cool comic. Definitely has its flaws. Would I recommend it? IDK depends on what you like. :P
